My name is Michael Andrews and I was born in California in 1957.
At the age of 10, I got my first job sweeping floors at Ted's Aircraft Interiors located at the Orange County Airport in California, Ted Brown was the owner. Ted was a master craftsman and my father Ken worked for him.
Ted and my father Ken upholstered many cars in the Bower's Car Museum. They also upholstered famous Indy race cars for driver Dan Gurney. I was lucky to visit Dan Gurney's shop on a few occasions.
Located in a shop next to Ted's was a man named Bruce Myers. Bruce was modifying Volkswagen Bugs, cutting 16 inches off the frames, and installing fiberglass bodies, giving birth to the Myers Manx Dune Buggy. Ted and my father were asked to design a top for the Dune Buggy, the three diamond design was a big hit.
Ted was older than my Dad and retired in 1971. Dad was offered a very good job in Long Beach at B&L Top Shop. My Dad's new bosses were more than happy to let me come and work Saturdays and Holidays, just like I did at Ted's. I believe it was at this early time in my life I knew this craft/trade was my calling.

There were all types of jobs at B&L, including marine canvas, which was new to my dad and I. I really enjoyed working on boats and had been on and around them since age 5. We lived in Huntington Beach and enjoyed skin diving and fishing, so the combination of working a trade in an environment I liked made my work enjoyable.
During my Senior year in High School (1975), I received a telephone call from an old co-worker of my dads at B&L, Robert (Bob) Erickson. Bob also lived in Huntington Beach and had quit B&L's top shop to start Bob's Marine Canvas, focusing on the boats located in the Newport Beach Harbor. Bob had seen me work at B&L, liked what he saw and asked me to come work for him. I worked for Bob out of his home part time until I graduated high school, then went to work for him full time.
In 1977, Bob located and bought a property on the corder of Victoria and Placentia in Costa Mesa, near the Newport Harbor. I worked hard for Bob. He was a wonderful mentor whom I loved and respected very much. In 1981 Bob decided to retire and sold me the business and property. I was 23 years old.
Within the year of my new business acquisition, my father Ken was working with me. We spent the next twenty years together building a great reputation in and around the Orange County area. We have ALWAYS been known for our quality craftsmanship and custom service.
As the year 2000 neared, my dad retired, and I began looking for a change of pace after having spent my entire life in Orange County. At the age of 411 found it, the Central Coast of California, San Luis Obispo County to be exact. I have been serving the Central Coast for over Ten years, and continue to do so.
